The success of surgery comes from a successful and harmonious teamwork. At the head of the surgical team is the surgeon who plans the operation. The surgeon is the one who clarifies which medical device and how it will be applied and with whom it will be done. The greatest support within the team falls to the operating room nurses. The relationship between nurse and surgeon, who are indispensable members of the healthcare team, is very important. Although this issue is viewed from many different areas, in this article, we will examine how the quality of the surgical handpiece affects the communication of nurses and surgeons during the operation.
In the study conducted by Kezban KORAŞ, Dilek ÖCALAN, Okan SOLAK in 2015 and published in the 4th issue of Gümüşhane University Journal of Health Sciences, ‘The effects of tense behaviors of surgeons in the operating room on nurses’ were examined. This research was conducted in the operating rooms of university, education-research, state and private hospitals in Afyon, Ankara, Bursa, Istanbul, Karaman, Konya provinces in line with the information received from 550 operating room nurses.
Since the surgeon is the most responsible and even the only responsible for the outcome of the surgical operation, surgeons may not show the expected tolerant behavior to the negativities experienced during the operation. When the reasons for lack of tolerance were investigated in this study, it was found that the most common problem encountered in the operating room was 46% inadequacy of materials, 37% lack of personnel, 16% working more than normal working hours. The reasons for surgeons to be nervous and irritable were determined as 36% poor quality of instruments, 34% surgical work not going well in 34% cases, 21% inadequacy of operating room personnel outside the sterile field.
During the operation, although surgeons cannot tolerate and use their opportunities to display their negative behaviors, nurses do not raise their voices against all the negativities and negative reactions of the surgeon and this situation reflects badly on their performance. It can be said that most of the incidents that make surgeons angry in the operating room are not due to individual deficiencies of nurses, but mostly due to environmental factors
As a result of the research; material adequacy and material quality are the main things that need to be done for our nurses, who do their duty for long hours, to see the positive behaviors they deserve, for the surgeon to be able to do his profession peacefully with the increasing performance and support of his team, for the team communication to be strengthened and for the success of surgical operations.
